How to Sign Up to Second Life

Besides Moodle, the course management system, your instructor may employ a new edging technology, Second Life, for teaching and learning activities. Second Life is a 3D virtual learning environment which is accessible on the Internet. Using a free client program - Viewer - it enables its users (Residents) to interact with each other through avatars. The School of Biomedical Informatics has its virtual campus in Second Life and is dedicated to use it for educational purposes. Please review the following video if you are new to Second Life.



In this tutorial, you will learn how to

  • get your avatar (a virtual representation of yourself)
  • download the Second Life software
  • login and visit the virtual world
  • visit the School of Biomedical Informatics, UT-H island

Get Your Avatar


Go to the Second Life website at: (It may have a different picture as the images on the website change regularly. Click on "Play for Free" (basic individual membership is free).

Step 2

On the Registration page, choose a name for your avatar and create your password. You can select an avatar by choose a starting look. This will be a visual representation of you. The choice here is fairly limited, but you will be able to change this later.

The next step is to type in your e-mail address and fill out some other information. Be sure that you give your valid email address. Then click on Create Account.

After your account is created, you will receive an e-mail to ask you activate your account. Be sure to check your e-mail box and activate your account.


Download the Second Life Software

After you set up your avatar, the next step you need to do is to download the Second Life software and install it once it is downloaded.

Step 1

Go to the Second Life website at: At the bottom of the screen, you will see a “Download Second Life” icon.

Step 2

Click on the icon, and you will be taken to the download page. Download the Second Life Viewer 2 and follow the instructions to install it.
